Mercedes-Benz Future Bus unveiled to revolutionize urban public transport

A spectacular autonomous solution for the future of city buses, conceived and realized by Daimler, made its public debut on Europe´s longest BRT route in Amsterdam.

The 20 km journey seemed to be a real challenge for the technology platform CityPilot that is responsible for autonomy and based on the Highway Pilot, implemented in the autonomously driving Mercedes-Benz Actros truck. But the Mercedes-Benz Future Bus met this challenge successfully. All the numerous bends and the passes through the tunnels and across the junctions with the traffic lights were driven through without steering, accelerating and without brake pedal. Everything became possible as the CityPilot is capable of recognising obstacles and pedestrians on the road, coming to a precise halt at bus stops, opening and closing the doors, moving off automatically and communicating with traffic light systems. Of course the driver could intervene at any time and immediately took control, but there was no need for this.

This revolutionary mobility system is claimed to improve safety, as nothing remains hidden from its cameras and radar systems. Besides, the driver's workload and tension is relieved. Furthermore, it boosts efficiency due to its smooth and predictive driving style, which saves wear and tear while lowering fuel consumption and emissions.
