Nooteboom Trailers, a leading specialist in abnormal transport from the Netherlands, has revealed the results of a two-year trial, aimed at investigating bamboo as an alternative to wood in production of flatbed semi-trailers.
The bamboo composite floor design has turned out to have a range of advantages regarding weight, price and durability in comparison with hardwood floorboards. Besides, bamboo can be harvested after only 5 years of growth, while trees should mature between 35-50 years to source hardwood.
Using bamboo to design the composite floor for special transport provides its low weight, as bamboo is significantly lighter than hardwood. At the same time, the alternative material boasts durability. It is warp-proof and expands only 1% when wet, compared to traditional wood, which expands 4-5%.
Inspired by the test results, Noteboom is intended to develop the composite floor solutions by means of much-promising bamboo.
