Rammers, also known as compaction or construction rammers, are powerful and versatile machines used primarily for construction and road-building projects.
They compact various aggregates and materials such as soil, sand, gravel, and asphalt to create a hard and stable base for building foundations, concrete slabs, roadways, paved surfaces, and other structures.
Rammers are typically gasoline or diesel-powered but are controlled and operated manually.
These machines are particularly effective for compacting ground areas with limited access, especially in tight spaces where larger compaction equipment is not suitable.
Compaction Rammers Applications
Although there are different sizes and models of compaction rammers, they generally consist of a heavy steel body that houses the engine, a handlebar that allows an operator to control the machine, and a “foot” or “shoe” at the bottom of the machine.
The shoe is usually made of tough and durable materials, like cast iron, to withstand repeated impacts during compaction.
But exactly what is a rammer used for?
Compaction rammers are used for a wide range of construction applications, such as:
- Compacting aggregate during trench backfilling - As trenches are gradually filled with sand, gravel, or dirt, a rammer, like the Bomag BVT65 or the Dynapac LT800, can be used to compact the individual layers of aggregate to ensure the final surface is hard and stable.
- Preparing the ground for concrete or pavement construction - Prior to pouring concrete or applying asphalt, the underlying surfaces need to be compacted to ensure the final structure will have solid support.
- Repairing roads and pavements by compacting asphalt patches - When patches of asphalt are applied to fill in cracks and potholes, a rammer is often used to ensure the patch is fully compacted into the existing void.
Of course, these are only a few applications for compaction rammers.
But in general, these machines are used whenever there is a need to create a stable base and where larger machines like steamrollers and other types of compaction equipment cannot be used.
