A combine harvester, also known as a combine, is a type of agricultural machine used to gather crops, such as wheat, corn, soybeans, and rice, and separate the grain from the straw and chaff.
With the ability to harvest large fields in a short amount of time, combine harvesters have revolutionized farming practices around the world, increasing efficiency and reducing overall labor costs for farmers.
How Do Combine Harvesters Work
These complex machines perform several tasks simultaneously to harvest and process crops. The process typically involves three stages:
- Cutting. The first stage is cutting, where the combine header cuts the crop at the base and gathers it into the machine.
- Threshing/Separating - The crop is then fed into the threshing mechanism, separating the grain from the straw and chaff using a rotating cylinder with carbide teeth that spin against a stationary concave. The cylinder’s teeth thresh the grain from the plant, while the concave holds the stalks and allows the grain to pass through.
- Cleaning. Next, the separated grain is fed into a cleaning system, which removes any leftover debris, such as chaff, leaves, and stems. The grain is then collected in a grain tank, while the waste is expelled from the back of the machine.
Brand-new combine harvesters are typically equipped with advanced sensors and technology, allowing the operator to monitor and adjust the machine’s settings for optimal performance.
Some of the best combine harvesters on the market include:
- The New Holland CS640 designed for small to medium-sized farming operations, it has a powerful 6-cylinder engine that delivers up to 258 horsepower. The CS640 also features a range of advanced technologies, making it an ideal addition to any farmer’s fleet.
- The Case-IH AF8250 is a high-capacity combine harvester designed for large-scale farming operations. It is equipped with a 12.9-liter engine, providing up to 480 horsepower, and its tracked drive system provides plenty of traction to handle the harshest harvesting conditions.
- The John Deere T660 Hill Master is designed for efficient and high-performance grain harvesting on hills and other types of steep terrain. It is driven by a powerful and fuel-efficient 6.8-liter engine that delivers up to 382 horsepower and sufficient traction to handle harvesting the hilliest croplands.
