Tracked or crawler tractors are as powerful, robust, and versatile as traditional wheeled tractors. However, they provide more maneuverability and offer a zero-turn radius, making them ideal for operations in tight quarters, small barns, warehouses, or row crops.
Tracks offer far better traction than wheels, which means you will get stuck less often, and they will disturb the soil less than if you were driving a steel-wheel or rubber-wheel tractor.
The Benefits of a Tracked Tractor
Depending on the make and model, crawler tractors vary in size, hauling capacity, and power output, ranging from smaller 50 to 100 HP tractors, like the FIAT 352, to much larger 200 or 300 HP tractors, like the Challenger MT865E or the John Deere 8520T.
- Increased Traction - Because these machines have a continuous track, rather than four wheels touching the ground, they provide significantly more traction and can go where other machines cannot. This makes them ideal for muddy, snowy, or icy areas.
- Zero-turn radius - When the left and right tracks are operated in opposite directions simultaneously, a tracked tractor can make a zero-point turn without needing to move forward or backward. Zero-turn tractors are ideal for row crop farms or places with limited space.
- Less damage to soil - When wheels spin and dig into the ground, they create ruts and holes that can cause damage to farm fields or lawns. But because tracked tractors have significantly more surface area, they will not sink and cause less soil disruption.
