Renault Trucks is a division of Volvo Trucks.
History
The Renault company was founded in 1889 by brothers Louis and Marcel Renault in the suburbs of Paris. In 1900 the company began production of light-duty trucks. Simultaneously, engineer Marius Berliet has developed the first truck which was based on single-cylinder gasoline engine. By the beginning of World War I, Renault has established itself as a manufacturer of trucks and was a supplier for the Russian army. In addition, Renault and Berliet participated in the creation of heavy tanks.
In 1923 Renault produced a road truck tractor, and in 1928 it was equipped with a diesel engine. The development of commercial vehicles was influenced by demand for vehicles during World War II and after it. The Berliet company was taking over small engineering companies and in 1957 created the heavy-duty truck T100.
Renault Véhicules Industriels was established in 1978. Renault is taking over Dodge Europe in 1983 and Mack in 1990 and creates a huge concern of vehicle production. Basically since 1983 the creation of the modern generation of Renault trucks has begun. In 2001 the company sold Renault Véhicules Industriels which was in charge of trucks’ production. It was sold to Volvo Trucks, and since 2002 company has been called Renault Trucks.
