Aerial platforms come by many different names, including aerial work platforms (AWPs), elevating work platforms (EWPs), cherry pickers, bucket trucks, or mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). Aerial platforms allow workers to reach previously inaccessible areas, mostly at height.
In its most basic form, an aerial platform consists of a chassis/vehicle and a mechanized boom with a platform attached at the end. The vehicle itself can be either unpowered or self-propelled. The boom can take many shapes (articulated, telescopic, scissor, etc.) and is usually powered by hydraulics or pneumatics.
Different Types of Aerial Work Platforms
As you can see from the description alone, aerial platforms come in vastly different varieties with strengths and weaknesses in different applications. However, the categories of aerial platforms you are most likely to encounter are:
- Articulated booms: May have one or more pivot joints, allowing for increased maneuvrability and ability to access hard-to-reach areas.
- Telescopic booms: Less mobile because they can only extend in a straight line but can typically reach higher and further away than an articulated boom.
- Scissor lifts: Only extends vertically using a crisscrossing scissor mechanism. They usually don’t have a driver’s cab, and the boom can be operated using various mechanisms, including a manual jack.
- Vertical mast lifts are similar to scissor lifts but feature a vertical telescopic (or equivalent) boom mechanism. They are usually smaller for work in tight areas.
- Truck-mounted aerial platforms: Fitted to a self-powered vehicle so that it can be driven across or within sites.
