Dumpers, also called dump trucks, are heavy-duty vehicles designed for carrying bulk material, like soil or rocks. They typically come in the form of wheeled or crawler vehicles with a large dump body and a frontal driver cab. The dump body can be tilted to dump out material, hence the name “dumper.”
Types of Dumper Vehicles
There are a variety of specialized dump trucks. While some dumpers can exhibit traits from more than one type, they generally fall under these categories:
- Mini dumpers: Smaller-sized with only four wheels, some classifying as pedestrian-operated vehicles.
- Crawler dumpers: Fitted with crawler tracks for increased grip for use in rough terrain, particularly sand or mud.
- Articulated dumpers: Usually very large, heavy-duty dumpers with a pivot joint between the cab and the dump body. This allows the vehicle to be driven on tricky terrain or even public roads.
- Rigid dumpers/rock trucks: Rigid trucks use wheels and a non-articulating body. They are mostly suitable for use on smooth terrain or long, straight roads but are simpler to operate and maintain.
Some of the most popular dumper brands today are Volvo, Caterpillar, Komatsu, and Bell.
