Road graders, also known as motor graders, are large multipurpose machines used to scrape and flatten (grade) existing surfaces. Motor graders are essential in keeping gravel and dirt roadways smooth and safe, but that is not all they are used for.
Graders are also used for various applications, including construction site grading and preparation, snow and ice removal, landscaping, agriculture, and mining.
Motor grader applications and attachments
Depending on the intended applications, operators can fit these machines with various blades and attachments. For example:
Ripper attachments break into solid surfaces, such as hardpack soil and ice, and loosen them to prepare for future grading.
V-plows are designed chiefly for snow removal applications.
And straight blades are the most common grader attachment and can be used for a wide range of scraping, leveling, grading, or removal applications.
Graders range in size from smaller machines with 8-foot blades to much larger machines with blades up to 14 feet long.
They also come in different classes based on their features, such as motor horsepower output, articulated or solid-framed chassis, transmission type, and operating weight.
The most common classes are light duty, medium duty, and heavy duty.
Each type has its advantages depending on the job that needs to be done.
Heavier classes are suited for grading much larger areas, such as a lengthy road. Lighter types are better suited for smaller areas and finer grading tasks like crowning or ditch digging.
