Rollers are a type of heavy vehicle machinery used to compress and even out soil on construction or work sites. They are still commonly called “steam rollers,” although they are now mostly powered by carbon fuels. Rollers are typically self-powered vehicles with a driver’s cab and one or more heavy drums that roll underneath them like wheels. Some rollers use a combination of tyred wheels and rollers, while others rely purely on their rollers to be mobile.
Types of Used Rollers For Sale
Rollers may seem like a simple piece of equipment, but there are plenty of variations for specific applications:
- Vibratory plates: usually unpowered, this roller uses a rapidly vibrating plate to stamp out air pockets and other inconsistencies to create a smooth surface. They are also effective at compacting rough material, like gravel.
- Rammers: Similarly, rammers are usually handheld equipment that looks like a jackhammer with a flat plate attachment. The piston-like action compacts the soil, and their compact and mobile nature makes them ideal for precision work in small spaces.
- Mini rollers: Mini rollers are more compact but usually still self-propelled with an open-air driver’s cab.
- Pneumatic roller: typically features five to nine rubber-tyred rollers instead of a drum(s) divided among a front and rear axle. They are often used to prepare surfaces, like wear or binder courses, natural soil, or cement for drum rollers.
- Road rollers: these are the typical rollers most people are familiar with that feature a large drum on one or both axles and are used in road and foundation construction to crush dirt, gravel, concrete, or asphalt.
