Telescopic booms are versatile and powerful jobsite machines designed to access working areas at heights. They are commonly used in construction, general maintenance, and industrial applications where vertical mobility and reach are essential.
Telescopic booms consist of a sturdy, extendable arm, known as a boom, that can be extended both vertically and horizontally to provide access to elevated areas that may be difficult to reach otherwise.
The boom is typically mounted on a mobile platform or chassis, allowing effortless maneuverability and transportation on job sites.
How Do Telescopic Booms Work?
Telescopic booms are typically controlled via hydraulic or electric systems, where the operator uses a control panel located on the platform to extend, retract, and articulate the boom to the desired height and location.
- Base or chassis - The base serves as the foundation of the telescopic boom and provides both stability and mobility for the machine. Telescopic booms, like the Genie S45XC, are mounted on wheels (or tracks), allowing the machine to move around as needed. The base houses the engine, a secondary control panel, and all the other mechanical components required for operation.
- The boom - The boom is the extendable arm of the telescopic system. It is made up of multiple sections or stages that can slide into one another, similar to a telescope, allowing the work platform to extend or retract as needed.
- Work platform or basket - The platform, also known as the basket, is the elevated work area where the operator is positioned. The platform connects to the end of the telescopic boom and can be raised or lowered to the desired working height. It’s generally equipped with controls, fall arrest hookup points, and attachment points for various tools and equipment.
