Question 1

Is a tipper truck a HGV?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a tipper truck is classified as a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) if its weight exceeds the standard threshold, typically a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of over 3.5 tonnes. This means it is subject to HGV regulations within the EU, including driving, insurance, and maintenance requirements.

Question 2

What licence do you need to drive a tipper?

Accepted Answer

To drive a tipper truck, you need a Category C (rigid trucks) or C+E (articulated trucks) driving licence in the UK and EU. This licence allows you to operate vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, with C+E required for articulated vehicles. A CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) may also be necessary for professional drivers.

Question 3

What are the different types of tipper trucks and their applications?

Accepted Answer

Tipper trucks come in several types, including rear tippers, side tippers, and three-way tippers. Rear tippers are commonly used for construction and mining to transport bulk materials like gravel and sand. Side tippers unload from either side, while three-way tippers can unload from any of the three sides, making them ideal for tight spaces. These trucks are commonly used in construction, mining, and other heavy-duty industries.

Question 4

What are the best safety practices when unloading with a tipper truck?

Accepted Answer

Safety when unloading a tipper truck is essential. Always park on stable, level ground, check the tipping mechanism, and never stand under the raised body. Ensure the load is balanced and the area is clear of obstacles. Follow all safety protocols, including securing the load before unloading, to prevent accidents and protect bystanders.

Question 5

What types of tippers exist?

Accepted Answer

There are several types of tipper trucks, including rear tippers, side tippers, and three-way tippers. Rear tippers are the most common and unload from the back. Side tippers unload from either side, while three-way tippers offer unloading from any of the three sides, providing more flexibility in tight spaces. These types are used for different cargo and site conditions, depending on the industry needs.
