MAN Truck & Bus, based in Munich, is the largest company within the MAN concern and one of the leading international commercial vehicles and transport solutions suppliers. The production of trucks by MAN started in 1915. The main shareholder of the company is Volkswagen Group.
Contemporary history has been written since 2000 when MAN introduced the TG-range and launched the first series of heavy-duty model TGA (“Trucknology Generation Type A”), setting new standards regarding comfort and ergonomics as well as new technologies. Five years later, MAN presented the TGL and TGM, light and medium duty trucks. After the TGA series discontinuation in 2007, the TGA was replaced by the new TGS and TGX models, which received the “Truck of the Year” award in 2008.
The models vary from a relatively small box trucks of only 7.5 tons to massive road trains with a load capacity of at least 250 tons.
Each series of MAN trucks is developed for specific tasks. The MAN TGX covers long-haul and heavy-duty transport operations. The TGS is mainly used for heavy distribution traffic, and the TGM series is often used in medium-heavy distribution traffic. In contrast, the TGL series is maneuverable and ideal for inner-city traffic.
Technical specifications and data of the MAN Trucks series
MAN TGX
A good mix of performance and comfort make the TGX an efficient long-haul truck. These machines can boast an attractive design, high torque, and low fuel consumption and are prevalent in the transport sector. The trucks range from 18 to 41 tons. The MAN TGX features a choice of three engine series offering a range of power outputs: the top-of-the-range MAN D38 developing up to 640 hp; the mid-range MAN D26 from 430 hp to 510 hp; or for light long-haul transport, the MAN D15 from 330 to 400 hp. Besides classic 4x2 and 6x2 semi-trailer tractors and chassis units, the 6x4 and 8x4 variants are also available. MAN offers XXL, XLX, and XL cabs for these trucks. Moreover, the TGX range has been named International Truck of the Year 2021.
MAN TGS
The TGS can be used for short distances, distribution transports, and construction sites. Due to its high engine power and excellent suspension, the TGS is a real all-rounder available in 2-axles, 3-axles, and 4-axles versions of the semi-trailer, chassis, and tipper modifications. There are M, L, and LX cabs for the vehicles. MAN TGS trucks are powered by MAN D1556 or MAN D2676 engines rated at 330-400 hp and 420-500 hp, respectively. Both engines meet Euro 6 requirements.
MAN TGX
MAN TGM is a medium-sized truck that combines comfort and fuel economy. It can be built in various ways, for example, with a closed or open cargo box. TGM has a gross weight of 13 to 26 tons, a power of 250 to 340 hp, and it comes with a range of axle configurations ranging from 4x4 to 6x4. The model is suitable for medium-heavy regional and nationwide distribution traffic and the construction sector. Moreover, the MAN TGM truck is equipped with innovative technologies such as an electronic braking system (EBS), anti-slip control (ACS), and an electronic stability program (ESP).
MAN TGL
MAN TGL is a vehicle that focuses on mobility and maneuverability. With a GVW of 7.5 to 12 tons, the TGL has a surprisingly high payload capacity for its size, making this truck ideal for urban transport. Powerful four- and six-cylinder engines ranging from 110 kW (150 hp) to 184 kW (250 hp) operate virtually emission-free in the Euro 6 version. MAN TGL trucks also feature lightweight construction, robust and body-friendly chassis with two axles, and a short wheelbase configuration. MAN offers four types of cab compatible with the TGL model: C, L, LX, and the crew cab, and safety and driver assistance systems for maximum driving comfort.
In 2020, the new MAN Truck Generation was unveiled to the public for the first time. The new generation of trucks sets new standards in driver orientation, assistance systems, and digital networks and consumes eight percent less fuel.
MAN Truck & Bus has also announced the mass production of heavy electric trucks in Munich for the beginning of 2024. MAN takes essential steps towards emission-free drive systems and focuses on battery-electric drives.
Undoubtedly, MAN has significantly impacted the development of commercial vehicles through its cutting-edge and often revolutionary innovations. Furthermore, the MAN brand is associated worldwide with efficiency and proximity to customers and offers a variety of solutions to meet their requirements.
